Care & Cleaning

Caring for your JaMS Kart jewellery

Our pieces are made in skin-safe alloys with a delicate surface finish, set with AD / cubic zirconia stones, pearls and enamel. With a little care, the shine and colour will last far longer.

The golden rules

  • Last on, first off. Wear your jewellery after applying perfume, deodorant, hairspray, lotion and make-up — and take it off before you remove them.
  • Keep it dry. Remove your jewellery before bathing, swimming, exercising or sleeping. Water, sweat and chlorine are the fastest causes of a dulled finish.
  • Avoid chemicals. Detergents, dishwashing liquid, bleach, hand sanitiser and haldi/kumkum will dull the surface and loosen stone settings.
  • Handle by the metal. When putting a piece on, hold the band or chain rather than pressing on the stones.

How to clean

  • Wipe gently with a soft, dry cotton or microfibre cloth after every wear to remove oils and sweat.
  • For dull stones, use a dry soft-bristle brush (a clean, unused baby toothbrush works well) to lift dust from around the settings.
  • Never use toothpaste, baking soda, silver-polish liquid, ultrasonic cleaners or metal polish on these finishes — they strip the surface layer permanently.
  • Do not soak these pieces in water or cleaning solution.

How to store

  • Store each piece in the pouch or box it arrived in, or in a separate zip-lock bag with the air pressed out. Air and humidity cause tarnish.
  • Keep pieces apart so they do not scratch one another.
  • Hang or lay chains and mangalsutras flat so they do not knot.
  • Store away from direct sunlight, and away from the bathroom.
  • A small silica-gel sachet in your jewellery box helps a great deal during the monsoon.

By product type

  • Mangalsutra & chains: open and close by the clasp only, never by pulling the chain. Wipe the black beads dry after wear.
  • Bracelets & hinged bangles: do not over-open the hinge — open just enough to slip your hand through, or the hinge will weaken.
  • Nose pins: clean the post with a dry cloth before each wear and keep it away from face creams and oils.
  • Enamel & pearl pieces: the most delicate of all — dry wipe only, no moisture whatsoever.

Please note

Minor variation in colour, polish and finish is natural in handcrafted jewellery and is not a defect. The finish is a surface layer and will wear gradually with use; the care above is the best way to slow that down.
